Peter is the Head of Institutional at Ascot Securities and has over 38 years of experience in Australian equity markets. He has held senior roles with other ASX participants including Hambros, El & C Baillieu, Ord Minnett and Instinet. Peter is also a Master of SAA.
Question: What does an average day look like for you?
Peter: I am responsible for a small team of senior market professionals providing broking and advisory services to a range of institutional clients who manage both long and short funds.
The day starts early as we process new economic and market data from around the world and narrow it all down to specific trading opportunities for our clients. We use cutting edge analysis software that is proprietary to aaig, of which our business is a part, and then apply our market experience and judgment to make convictions calls on where to trade.
At Ascot we focus on absolute return and we are completely benchmark agnostic. We scan the entire market, make sense of the myriad data points, and recommend only true alpha generating positions on individual companies. In the current reporting season, we have scored a 70% success rate on our directional calls.
Question: What are the key challenges facing your business?
Peter: Our business continues to grow, so the main challenge is finding the right individuals to join our business. We are very careful about who we hire. Our team is small but very skilled, experienced and high impact. That’s our business model. It’s a good problem to have.
Question: What are your priorities for 2019?
Peter: The main priority is to start marketing our Introducing Broker service through our Integrated Trading Platform. We opened our first account with ASRW last year and completed all necessary internal testing. We have everything in place to get started and are merely waiting for the timetable set by the ASX to roll around so we can formally transition ASRW. This will happen in the third Quarter of 2019. After that we will market the service more broadly.
